Smoking & Crohn’s disease

If you smoke, you increase the chances that you’ll get Crohn’s disease.

And if you have Crohn’s disease and smoke, you can worsen disease and make it harder to treat.

  • Smoking tends to worsen Crohn’s disease symptoms.
  • Smoking may mean having to take more medication to control the inflammation of Crohn’s disease.
  • If you have surgery to treat Crohn’s, smoking increases the chances of the disease coming back sooner.
  • If a person with Crohn’s disease quits smoking, the problems caused by smoking usually decrease or go away entirely.
